Located in Rhinebeck, New York, the house was originally conceived as a summer retreat, but with the Covid-19 pandemic, the goal quickly became a primary residence. With that, came a new set of priorities and design perimeters. The clients desire for privacy pushed the house away from the existing roads and neighbors. The new location provided views to the lake to the South. This view was integrated into the design by rotating the house so the office and kitchen could both benefit.
Organizationally, the house was split into two bars, connected with a glass volume to provide a framed view of the natural wetlands and fields on the site when entering. As well as providing a clear separation between the public and more private spaces.
Finally, the clients’ interest and love of the archetypal pitched roof was exaggerated. The roof pitch increased and material palate minimized, with durability and low maintenance being key. The resulting interior, allowed for an expansive vaulted great room and tall ceilings in the bedrooms, while keeping the exterior volumes visually and formally the same.
